We are making it point to incorporate Biblical studies throughout our day. Not only in our household lives but also in our home schooling lives. This week one of our focuses for Math and Science are measurements. (I know you are saying how is this Biblical....just follow me for a minute.)
Our measurement focus has been on cups, tablespoons, teaspoons and general cooking measurements. (a pinch here and a dab there) There is no better way to learn measurements then to use them in everything you do if possible. So this week we are making goodies. Everything from brownies to waffles to a whole dinner. We started the week off with making brownies. (Which might I add Isabella bought herself and has shared them with the whole family.) This was her first time making them "all by herself". We covered all the different measuring devices and how they look different and similar and how we use them. Then off she went to making brownies. They were quite delicious!!! On Tuesday, we wanted to reach out to the community. Christ commands us to encourage one another in everything we do. "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:24"
Our encouragement yesterday was having the girls make cupcakes for the residents at the rest home. (If you don't know we have a nice rest home/assisted living across the street from our house. They have 19 residents right now ranging in age from 50's to 80's. They have freedom to come and go as they please but most are there because they can't stay at home aren't ready for a nursing home yet either.) So off went to the rest home and we were greeted at the door by 5 sweet little ladies who just ate up our girls. We visited up and down the hall with the residents who were there and wanted company which most did. We found such a sweet bunch of people who are just looking for someone to talk to, sometimes about what is going on in today's world and others want to talk about the good old days. Either way we lent our ears and hugs and hand shakes. Just before we were leaving all the residents were sitting down for dinner in which they found a surprise....a Valentine cupcake to brighten their dinner from the Henderson's with love.
As we walked back across the street I began to think about how just that little bit of time we spent there made a bright spot in the residents lives. It reminded me that each person there was in need, in need of a joyful hello, in need of hug, in need of someone to stop and listen to what they had to say, in need of the love of Christ given in some many different ways. "I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation,.... Philippians 4:12)
